The frustration and restlessness that come with being human — rendered in line and color stripped of all excess, instant and clear. Illustrator and graphic designer AKA, originally from Hokkaido and a graduate of Tama Art University, works widely both in Japan and abroad. Today, he shares the song that has shaped the contours of who he is.
Could you tell us about your profession?
I work as an illustrator and graphic designer.
In what kind of environment or moment do you usually find yourself listening to music?
Most often while driving.
I choose what to listen to based on my mood for the day and the kind of energy I want to bring.

How and when did you first encounter this song?
I first heard it in a movie commercial on TV — that's what got me into it. I think I was in around sixth grade at the time.
Of course the lyrics were in English, so I didn't really understand what they meant until some time later. Back then, I was just completely drawn in by the melody.
Is there a memory or episode connected to this song that stands out to you?
That song led me to fall in love with LINKIN PARK as a whole. The album that "What I've Done" is on is called Minute to Midnight, but from there I started listening to everything — older albums, newer ones, all of it equally.
How do you feel this song has influenced who you are today?
I started listening to a lot more Western music, and English became one of my stronger subjects.
I'm not sure whether it's influenced my art directly, but I have a feeling there's something there at the root of it.
Is there any music or artist you've been into recently?
Lately I've been listening to a lot of anime and film soundtracks.
One artist I've particularly been into is Kevin Penkin.
Is there anything you try to value in your everyday life or lifestyle?
Being able to maintain my own motivation — that's something I try to hold onto. Music has been a big help with that.
Through that, I hope to live each day with a little more care and intention.
Do you have any upcoming shows or announcements you'd like to share?
The details aren't finalized yet, but I'm planning to hold a solo exhibition next year.

Illustrator and graphic designer. Originally from Hokkaido. Graduated from the Graphic Design department of Tama Art University in 2018, and has since provided illustrations across a wide range of media. Recipient of the Jury Encouragement Award at the 17th Graphic 1_WALL. Has held numerous solo exhibitions. Member of the Tokyo Illustrators Society.
